Local 2's Courtney Gilmore reports after two victims' legs were severed in a crash.

Houston police said two men would likely lose their legs after a violent crash early Monday morning.

According to officers, the accident happened shortly after midnight on John F Kennedy Boulevard.

A man reportedly flagged down a taxi, and the driver stopped in the middle of the road.

Investigators said while the man and the cab driver were putting luggage into the trunk, a green Honda slammed into the back end of the taxi.

The cab driver and his passenger were caught between the two cars. Houston Police officer J.D. Rossman described the crash, saying the two men's legs were smashed when the cars collided.

Police said the driver of the Honda wasn't intoxicated. Officers said he claimed he couldn't see the taxi or either of the victims on the dark road.

According to investigators, the two men likely blocked the tail lights of the taxi when they were putting the luggage in the trunk, which would have made it difficult for oncoming traffic to see them.

A helicopter transported both men to the hospital, where they were rushed to emergency surgery.
