Parents at an elementary school in The Heights are being warned after a man tried picking up two children after school, according to police.
The first incident happened around 3:45 p.m. on Thursday at The Heights Public Library on Heights Boulevard. According to police, a man driving a van approached an 8-year-old girl and asked if she wanted a ride.
The girl ran inside the library and the man drove away.
Fifteen minutes later, police said a boy walking home from nearby Harvard Elementary was also offered a ride by a man fitting the same description: A white man in his 60's carrying a red poncho and driving a white van with shades on the windows.
In the incident near the school, the boy's mother was walking a few steps behind her son and saw the whole thing happen. The mother was able to provide police with a description of the man and the van's license plate number.
In both cases, the man drove away without harming any children. Still, school officials reminded students Friday of effective "stranger danger" techniques.
A letter to parents was also sent home advising parents to do the same.
The Houston Independent School District Police Department has opened an investigation along with the Houston Police Department. They will provide additional patrols in the area for the next few days.
