Rice University police issue crime alert

HOUSTON -

The Rice University Police Department is sending out a crime alert after a robbery.

The robbery happened Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. near the BioScience Research Collaborative building.

The victim was approached along the sidewalk on the north side of University Boulevard east of Travis Street. The robber approached the man and asked to use his cell phone to call his parents. The victim said the robber then simulated that he was carrying a weapon in the front pocket of his shorts and threatened to use violence if the victim did not hand over his phone and money.

But the victim said no weapon was ever displayed. The victim gave him his phone and a few dollars.

The robber then headed east toward Fannin Street.
