HOUSTON -

Thursday was the last day of classes for several districts in the Houston area.

Multiple districts stepped up security on the final day of the school year.

Law enforcement officials, ministers and school officials came together to make sure the last day was a safe one and students started the summer off right.

It’s part of the Project Safe Start program that started more than 20 years ago.

Kashmere High School in the Houston Independent School District is a familiar place for Pastor Rodney Thomas of Fidelity Mission Baptist Church.

“This happens to be my alma mater, the school I graduated from,” he said.

In the past, there had been the potential for violent outbreaks, but in the program’s last five years, ministers involved said there haven’t been any fights.

“Ya know, as they say it takes a village to raise a child, and we're all a part of the village,” said Thomas. “So the community, we just have a love for our students and our teachers also, and administrators. And we want to do all that we can to help the environment be safe.”
