HOUSTON -

A parent of a Galena Park North Shore High School football player is accused of assaulting the team's coach after a playoff loss last Friday.

It was a huge playoff game under the Friday night lights Nov. 29 between North Shore and Cypress Fair high schools at Tully Stadium. After Cy-Fair won 9-7, witnesses say Manuel Deleon, the father of a North Shore High football player, jumped over the stadium railing and attacked the team's head football coach.

Spring Branch ISD police broke up the assault shortly after it began.

"I know Manuel Deleon; he's a wonderful man. He just didn't think right. I was told he tackled Coach (David) Aymond. I have a lot of respect for Coach Aymond," said Beverly Burrous.

Police say  Deleon told them he was upset because he wanted Coach Aymond to utilize his son more during the game. Deleon's son scored North Shore's only touchdown of the game.

"Well, I think sometimes people get too emotional about it. It's just a game that's out there for the kids. It's not there for the parents," said Spring Branch ISD Police Chief Chuck Brawner.

Galena Park ISD released this statement, "The North Shore Mustang football program has enjoyed great success under Coach Aymond. While the loss in the playoffs was disappointing, attacking a coach was in no way justified. It is regrettable this parent made such a poor decision. Coach Aymond is at work as usual today and will continue to prepare each and every athlete for success on and off the football field."

Because Coach Aymond is 68 years old, Deleon was charged with injury to an elderly individual.

The incident was all the buzz at North Shore High. Students said what happened sets a bad example.

"It shouldn't get that far for you to get that angry and put your hands on a coach like that," said North Shore student Te'Kevion Peters.

Deleon, 34, was arrested and being held in the Harris County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
