Mosquito experts say Monster Mosquitoes are nothing to fear; it's the Southern House Mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus.
According to Dr. Rudy Bueno of Harris County Mosquito Control, Gallinippers, also known as Monster Mosquitoes, are not to be feared.
"It can inflict a pretty painful bite," Bueno said.
He says other than the sting, they're harmless.
“It's a pest mosquito. It does not carry any diseases,” Bueno said.
The Southern House Mosquito, one of the 56 species of mosquitoes that reside in Houston, is the largest carrier of the West Nile Virus in the Houston area.
According to Bueno, it's during the drier years in Texas that you will see more activity with the virus.
In 2012, there were 73 cases of the virus reported in Houston and three deaths.
Bueno thinks that the recent storms in Houston have helped that there were zero positive tests for West Nile.
Employees at Harris Co. Mosquito Control say the best way to protect yourself from mosquitoes is to use insect repellent with DEET.
