HOUSTON -

The Texas Department of Health is issuing a measles warning after the ninth case this year.

That number is the most the state has seen since 1996. The most recent case is in Tarrant County. There have also been cases in Dallas and Denton counties, as well as Harris County back in April.

Measles are very contagious and spread through coughing and sneezing.

Health officials are asking people to make sure they're vaccinated against the illness and they're urging health care providers to be on the lookout for patients with measles symptoms, like a rash and high fever.

Left unchecked and untreated the virus can be deadly.
