Scoring the best deals on snacks for Super Bowl parties

HOUSTON – Even for those staying home for the big game, Super Bowl festivities can get expensive.

The National Retail Federation's Super Bowl spending survey estimates that viewers will spend an average of $77.88 on food, game day gear, decorations and televisions. There are plenty of deals in the Houston area to help whittle that number down.

H-E-B has the best deals on domestic beer, like Miller, Coors and Budweiser. Eighteen-packs are on sale for $12.97 or about $0.72 a bottle. The lowest price shoppers will find on St. Arnold's beer is at Spec's. It's available for $6.99 a six-pack or $1.16 a bottle.

The price to beat on soda is $3 for a 12-pack. Kroger has Pepsi and Coca-Cola for that price. And for anyone who doesn't feel like cranking up the grill, Randall's is selling 16 pieces of its signature fried chicken for just $12.99.

H-E-B and Kroger are both pushing St. Louis-style pork ribs. Shoppers can grab them for $1.88 a pound at H-E-B and $1.99 at Kroger. That's limited to two packages at both stores.

Kroger said stores sell twice the number of avocados during the week of the Super Bowl, so they're on sale for $0.88 each, and they're $0.87 at H-E-B. To go with the guacamole, Kroger is selling two bags of Lay's for $4.

And don't forget about the wings! H-E-B is offering $8.51 in free items for anyone who picks up two packages of H-E-B Flying Sauce chicken wings.
