HOUSTON -

Charges were filed Thursday against a man accused of beating and stabbing his 50-year-old roommate at their northwest Houston home.

Mercedes Mejia, 30, is charged with murder. According to Houston police, four men lived in a home in the 9300 block of Saddle Lane. The couple who owns the home also own several taquerias and were renting the house out to their employees.

The wife received a call at around 4 a.m. Wednesday notifying her that something had happened. As she drove to the house to check things out, her husband called 911.  When officers arrived at the scene, Jose Ramon Garcia's body was found in a nearby ditch. Police say he died from blunt force trauma and stab wounds.

After questioning the roommates and searching the home, police determined that Mejia allegedly killed Garcia during an altercation.

Witnesses reported seeing Mejia produce a large kitchen knife, but said they did not see the actual stabbing.
