HOUSTON -

Local 2 Investigates checked the safety of limousines in Houston after a fiery crash killed five people inside a stretch limo in California over the weekend.

"I said, 'I need to go back. I need to go back and save some more,' and the man said, 'No, you can't go back anymore,'" recalled Nelia Arellano, who survived the fatal limousine crash.

The driver believes an electrical problem sparked the fire. The limousine was a 1999 model, which would be illegal on the streets of Houston.

"Stretch limos in the city of Houston can't be older than 10 years," said city spokesman Christopher Newport.

There are 1,700 licensed limousines in Houston.

"There is a decal on every window that says city of Houston permit so folks can just look for that and rest assured that vehicle has been looked at and inspected at least once during the year," said Newport.

Newport advised passengers to make sure the limousine doors open and close and carries a fire extinguisher.
