Galveston council member faces backlash over Facebook post

GALVESTON, Texas – A Galveston City Council member is facing backlash over a video he posted on his Facebook page.

Norman Pappous (District 4) took a scene from a German movie featuring Adolf Hitler and several Nazi advisers, and changed the story line by adding English subtitles -- poking fun at Galveston's slow-moving bureaucratic government.

Many criticized Pappous for posting the video.

"We recognize that Council Member Pappous has the right to criticize city processes and representatives of Galveston's government but invoking the Holocaust and comparing city officials to Adolf Hitler and Nazis is never appropriate and never acceptable," said the Anti-Defamation League in Houston.

Pappous says he is not going to apologize for the video.

He uploaded the video to YouTube and says it is meant to be a parody, not to be offensive.

The council member argues thousands of people have recreated similar videos before and he is being singled out by his political opponents.

Pappous played the video during a City Council meeting but later said it was not an appropriate place to show it.

The ADL responded by saying, "We are comfortable that Council Member Pappous fully understands how hurtful such comparisons can be and that they only serve to stifle constructive dialogue."

Channel 2 asked Pappous if he intends to take the video down and he said he does not because he doesn't find the video offensive.
