HOUSTON -

A Houston police officer is recovering after a suspected drunken driver hit his squad car late Tuesday night, police said.

Investigators said the officer was headed southbound on North Shepherd Road when a woman driving a black Lexus hit him as she was trying to make a left turn at Thornton.

Police said the driver slammed into the side of the officer's car, causing the cruiser to slam into a wooden telephone pole.

Investigators said the pole split in half, causing the cruiser to spin around.

The officer was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition, police said. He had multiple minor injuries, including a cut to his ear that required stitches.

The woman, identified as Suzanne Speak Meier, was not hurt, but after further investigation, police said they determined she was intoxicated.

Meier is charged with DWI - second offender. She is being held on $1,000 bond.
