A 5-year-veteran of the Houston Police Department will receive a prestigious national award this weekend in Washington D.C. for his outstanding police work.

Officer Michael LaReau is a recipient of the "Top Cops" award. He's being recognized for his actions during a tense situation inside Pepper's restaurant in Pasadena on July 30, 2012.

An armed man was in the restaurant and began threatening some patrons, police said. One of the customers inside was a retired HPD officer, who attempted to calm down the man and get him to leave.

The officer's relative called LaReau, who arrived before Pasadena police showed up. LaReau came face to face with the man and ended up shooting him after police said he failed to follow an order to drop his weapon.

LaReau is attending a special ceremony at the White House on Saturday.
