Police say a cab driver was found shot to death in the driveway of an apartment complex near the Texas Medical Center.
Houston police believe the cab driver, identified as 52-year-old Donalvon Odell Rhyne, was shot at around 10:45 p.m. Thursday. He was discovered at around 7 a.m. Friday. Investigators say Rhyne was found dead slumped over in the driver's seat of a United Cab at the Camden Vanderbilt Apartments in the 7300 block of Brompton.
Houston police said Rhyne had been approached by two black men believed to be in their mid to late 20s. The men violently struggled with Rhyne in an apparent robbery and then shot him, according to police.
"Between 10:50 p.m. and 11 p.m. two suspects walked up off of the street and approached the cab driver. There was some type of a struggle between the suspects and the cab driver. And he was shot. The suspects fled on foot northbound from this location," said HPD Homicide Investigator Sgt. W. L. Meeler.
Houston police said the victim had just dropped off a passenger, when it appears two people approached the cab, shot and robbed the driver and walked away. Investigators believe this was a crime of opportunity caught on apartment complex surveillance video and cameras in the cab.
"Somebody out there saw something," Sgt. Meeler said. "That's the person we need to talk to."
Witnesses told police they heard shots fired.
"I'm very shocked about this," said Diane Broussard, who works nearby. It's very scary because you look at this apartment complex -- it just looks gorgeous and it's in a great area."
United Cab said its heart goes out to the contract driver's family. The company said Rhyne had been a driver on and off with United for 11 years.
