HOUSTON -

Less than two months after the state forced the annexation of North Forest ISD, HISD welcomed about 7,000 former North Forest students Monday.

A new school and new school district for thousands of students who formerly attended school in North Forest Independent School District.

Local 2 spoke to a few parents at Thurgood Marshall Elementary who said the transition to HISD has been a smooth one.

“I think it went good. They did a lot of improvements. So I'm happy,” said parent Charles Randall.

“The transition went well. North Forest ISD is still a great district and HISD is also a great district so the merge was perfect,” said parent Charles Malveaux.

HISD superintendent Dr. Terry Grier greeted students at the school Monday morning. He said the district has invested $17 million in the schools and is working to bridge a serious achievement gap.

“We've got great teachers we hired this summer, lots of new programs, but at the end of the day it's the abilities of the teacher in the classroom that's going to help us close that gap,” said Grier.
