HOUSTON -

Reading, writing and arithmetic are still at the heart of education in schools. But with a booming oil industry in Houston a new school is taking education a step farther with a focus on energy.

August 26 the marks the first day of school for HISD and at the Energy Institute High School, 200 students will walk into the first of its kind in the country.

"The energy industry is booming since Houston is the center. The thought of having this school in Houston is exciting," said freshman Timothy Chung.

He is among 200 incoming freshmen accepted to Energy Institute High. It's a STEM school focusing on science, technology, engineering and math.

"To be able to connect them to the real world experiences that they're going to have once they graduate from high school," said Dr. Andrew Houlihan, HISD Chief of Major Projects.

Back on April 12 it was announced this school would open in the fall. A passionate advisory board made up of professionals in the industry helped get this former elementary school geared up for the 21st century in energy and science labs and classrooms.

"In four years we look forward to counting your scholarship dollars. Looking forward to these students adding to our industry," said HISD Board Trustee Paula Harris.

This specialized magnet program is designed to help students interested in pursuing a career in energy.

"We know building a strong future Houston and energy industry developing skills the talents and most importantly the passions of our young people," said Sara Ortwein with ExxonMobil.

Enrollment is capped at 200. We're told 50 students remain on the wait list.
