A handcuffed male suspect had been on the run for a couple hours in downtown Houston after escaping from custody.

HOUSTON -

An escaped suspect who had been on the run for a couple hours Monday evening in downtown Houston is back in custody.

Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies and Houston police officers were actively looking for the suspect, who ran from deputies as they were trying to book him into the jail in downtown Houston.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, deputies said the suspect was in handcuffs when he ran from the patrol car he had been transported in near the jail on Commerce and N. San Jacinto Street.

Investigators said the arrestee, Johnathon Richmond, was hiding in brush near a bayou when he was captured.

Earlier, officers set up a perimeter that bordered the Buffalo Bayou, which runs behind the jail booking and releasing center. K-9 units joined in the search.

Richmond, 29, had been arrested in Harris County on a larceny warrant issued in Jefferson County, deputies said.
