A woman died after she was shot, pushed out of a moving car on a freeway and run over, investigators said.
Houston police said a man was driving a Dodge Mangum with two passengers westbound on the Katy Freeway about 8:45 p.m. Thursday.
The man fired shots at the women in the Katy area, investigators said.
One woman, who was pistol-whipped, jumped out of the car near Westgreen Boulevard, investigators said. She was not seriously hurt.
The second woman was shot, police said. The driver pushed her out of the moving car near Grand Parkway, detectives said. Witnesses said she was clinging to the car before she fell to the ground. She was hit by several oncoming cars, investigators said.
Detectives said it is unclear if the bullets, the impact of the fall or the oncoming cars killed her.
By the time authorities got to the scene, she was badly dismembered, police said. Her name has not been released.
Investigators said the driver continued on to the Brookshire area. Around F.M. 1489, he slammed into a guardrail, spun his vehicle and then clipped an 18 wheeler. The car went across the grassy median, through the eastbound lanes of traffic on I-10 and crashed on the side of the road, police said.
He bailed out and ran, detectives said. Witnesses said he appeared to be a tall man, but could not provide information about his age or ethnicity.
When investigators arrived, they found large amounts of blood in the car and several bullet holes.
Detectives are now working to identify the shooter and determine what relationship he had to the women. Police said the women may have been held against their will.
