A woman warned students Wednesday that being distracted while driving can change lives in an instant.
Katie Mathews was 16 years old when her life changed. She was a passenger in a car while a friend was driving along a highway in Florida. The driver lost control and crashed while the two were getting directions to a party.
"When the car flipped, the roof collapsed on my side of the car. I broke my neck and I can't use muscles from my chest down or my hands," Mathews told students at Northland Christian School.
Mathews said speaking with teens and young adults is a way she can spread the message that not taking that call or responding to a text can save a life.
"You think you're invisible and people think it can't happen to them, but it can," Mathews said.
