A Liberty County police officer fell victim to a home invasion and robbery in Baytown.
Baytown police responded to the call at the The Villas of Rolling Brook Apartments on the 3700 block of Emmett Hutto Wednesday afternoon.
"When he came home, the door was ajar and as soon as he came in, he saw that some furniture had been toppled over," Lt. Eric Freed said.
The off-duty officer said he who knew his 16-year-old nephew was supposed to be home at the time. He told Local 2 he decided to enter his home, even though he did not have his weapon with him.
"It won't happen again," the officer said.
The 22-year-old victim is a newly minted police officer who works for a small department in Liberty County. The officer said he fought with the two robbers, one of whom jumped him in his doorway.
"One thing is when I took him down to the ground, his cellphone came down to his pocket," he said.
Police are now examining the cellphone. After the brief tussle, the officer said he was escorted at gunpoint to his linen closet and was told not to come out. The robbers wrapped his nephew in sheets to subdue him, the officer said.
Neither victim was seriously injured. The robbers left the scene with a safe from the home and remain at large.
