Students and teachers held a moment of silence at Dawson High School on Thursday to mourn the loss of one of their own.

Pearland police said Folabi Akanbi died Wednesday at Silverlake Elementary, 2550 County Road 90.

Officials said the 17-year-old collapsed on the playground court during a pick-up basketball game with friends. Paramedics took Akanbi to Memorial Hermann, where he was pronounced dead, investigators said.

As flags flew at half-mast at Dawson High School one day later, a crowd clad in black gathered to mourn the loss of Number 79 on the Dawson Eagles team.

A makeshift memorial started around the parking spot the teen’s car occupied one day before. Classmates left behind letter jackets, cleats, flowers, and notes.

The standout lineman was well on his way to a promising future. He recently signed a letter of intent play football for Montana State.

Counselors have been made available to talk with students during this difficult time.

Details on an official memorial have not yet been released.
