A University of Houston student has been credited with discovering a suspicious device on campus that police said turned out to be a hoax.

University of Houston police said the student was looking for items to include in an art project when he discovered the device in a wooded area near the intersections of Martin Luther King Jr., Calhoun, and Wheeler.

Police said Houston Fire Department bomb squad technicians were called to the scene and determined the suspicious device was a hoax device.

"At no time was there an actual threat to persons or property," said University of Houston police chief Ceaser Moore. "University of Houston police investigators are attempting to determine who created and placed the hoax device."

Police have not released any information about possible suspects.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
