HOUSTON -

A police officer shot a suspect while trying to serve him a warrant at a house in southeast Houston.

Around 9 p.m. Tuesday, a Houston Police Department narcotics team went to a home in the 6700 block of Sherwood Drive to serve a warrant.  When they went into the house, officers said the man they were searching for, George Ralph Benard, 38, went to the back of the house.

One of the officers followed Benard and ordered him to stop, investigators said.  Police said Benard then ran and when the officer chased him, Benard suddenly turned on the officer and appeared to reach for something.

The officer continued trying to give orders, which were ignored, detectives said.  Fearing for his safety, Officer F. Rodriguez shot Benard in the abdomen.

Benard was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Police said they found a pellet gun near him.

No officers were injured during the incident. Rodriguez is a 20-year veteran of the department.

The home is across from Foster Elementary. Parents said they were shocked to hear what happened.

"I have 13 kids and four go to this school," Gail Owens said. "That's scary. I walk to school with my kids every day and I want to feel like I'm going somewhere I feel safe."

Police said they plan to patrol the area to continue to cut down on drug activity.
