After a turbulent start to 2014, the National Retail Federation says it expects sales in November and December to increase by a healthy 4.1 percent to $616.9 billion, higher than 2013’s 3.1 percent increase during that same time frame.

Harris County deputies have a holiday crime warning this shopping season. Officers are warning shoppers that there is usually a spike in crime during the holidays.

"Crime this time of year steps up -- a lot of property crimes, thefts and vehicle burglaries and stuff like that this time of year," said Capt. Wally Weighat.

Capt. Weighat also said that there are some things people can do that will help stay safe while shopping.

  • Keep your purse close to your body
  • Be vigilant of your surroundings
  • Do not shop while you are alone
