Oct. 14: Architect of Houston Texans, breast cancer awareness

HOUSTON -

The Houston Texans are breaking franchise records. How have they made it to this point? One main reason? The efforts of Executive Vice President and General Manager Rick Smith.

Smith is a guest this week on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall and talks about how the Texans have been built into an undefeated NFL  force.

The Texans were 2-14 when Smith came on board as general manager in 2006. Now the name of the Texans is being used in the same sentence with Super Bowl contender!  Smith sits down for a rare one-on-one interview to talk about the keys to the team's success so far and what it will take to go all the way.

You'll notice a lot of pink this Sunday as the Texans take the field against the Green Bay Packers.  It's an NFL effort to call attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  More than 225,000 women this year are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer – 15,000 in the state of Texas.

There are many great organizations in Southeast Texas  fighting to help those who are fighting the disease and three of those organizations are represented on this week's Houston Newsmakers program.

Adriana Higgins is the executive director of the Houston affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. That organization raises and grants millions of dollars a year to local organizations who do research and provide support for those impacted.

Dorothy Gibbons is the executive director of The Rose, an organization that provides mammography screening, diagnosis and access to treatment support to all women regardless of their ability to pay.

Jackie Parsons is the project director for the Good Neighbor Healthcare Center. They provide a wide range of healthcare services, including those relating to all aspects of breast health and care.

All three women provide a unique view of the front lines of the battle against breast cancer and the push for women to better take care of themselves.

Find out about the many services available at no cost to you or how you can help provide help and care for someone else who can't afford it.

It is a great half hour of excitement for the Texans and knowledge about the great support available in our community. Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall airs at 10 a.m. Sundays right after Meet the Press with David Gregory.
