HOUSTON -

Shopping carts stacked with piles of presents were pushed around the Sam's Club on Rice Avenue Wednesday morning by the better halves of NFL athletes in Houston, both former and current.

"We have wives from all teams supporting us today here in Houston, as well as across the nation," said Tammara McDonald, wife of former Cincinnati Bengal Ricardo McDonald.

Teaming up with the Salvation Army, the wives carried on a tradition that started six years ago.

This year, they shared in a shopping spree with a total of $20,000 to spend on twenty local families in need of a little help for the holidays.

"We were given this platform to make a difference, and we take joy in doing that," said McDonald.

"For us it's also a great reminder that we have 30,000 other local children in the greater Houston region who have signed up for Christmas gifts, who are really depending on the support we receive from the community to have a Merry Christmas this year," said Juan Alanis of the Salvation Army.

Ideally, how they spent a day could make someone's year.
