A Marine injured in Afghanistan received the keys to his new home.
Lance Corporal Daniel Peterson was given the keys to his brand new, custom built Tomball home thanks to Homes for Troops and dozens of other area business on Saturday.
Peterson had recently returned from his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, where a bomb explosion left Peterson as a double-amputee.
"To have my independence back is the best gift somebody could give me and I want to thank all of you," said Peterson, who spoke before his family, friends, supporters, and new neighbors.
The custom home will allow Peterson to move about more freely now that he is confined to a wheelchair. People were able to take a tour of the home, which features wider doorframes, automatic doors and hardwood floors throughout to allow easier access for Peterson.
"Having a sense of independence for a guy like me is a huge, huge thing because when you get injured in combat severely that is immediately what's taken from you," said Peterson.
The California native also received a check and gift cards he could use on his new home thanks to donations from the public.
