Deputies are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a man at his northwest Harris County home Sunday night.
Witnesses said the gunman pulled up to the Bernardo Barrera's home on Seton Lake Drive near Cedar Park Lane around 11:45 p.m. Barrera, 21, was inside the garage with two friends.
Harris County sheriff's deputies said the masked man got out of the car, approached the garage and started firing shots.
Witnesses reported hearing more than 20 shots before the shooter got back into the gray sedan and sped off.
Neighbors called 911, but were afraid to leave their homes to see what happened. Barerra's 19-year-old sister was inside the home and ran outside.
"He had a mask on his face, but that's all we have at this point," Deputy Felipe Rivera said.
Barrera died in the garage. His mother and sister were inside the home at the time of the shooting, according to deputies. They were not hurt.
The victim's mother said Barrera had a 1-year-old daughter. According to court records, Barrera had served time for burglary and was awaiting trial on an armed robbery charge. His sister said he ran with a rough crowd.
"He had a lot of haters," Barrera's sister said. "Probably some of those guys want to set him up and did that to him."
Despite his troubled past, relatives said Barrera was trying to turn his life around. They said he quit going out at night, stayed close to home and started going to church.
Deputies said the motive for the slaying remained under investigation.
