April 3, 2013: Many drivers may be stuck with dents and dings caused by hail even if they have insurance. Amy Davis reports.

HITCHCOCK, Texas -

Dozens of vehicles in Hitchcock had smashed windshields or other serious damage after a hailstorm. KPRC Local 2 has learned that many of those drivers may be stuck with the dents and dings even if they have insurance.

Auto body repairmen said the average cost to fix just one of those hail dents is about $100. If the cost for repairs is more than the car is worth, the insurance company may declare the vehicle a total loss and give the owner the value of their vehicle. The insurer will usually give the owner the option of buying it back, but it will carry a "salvaged" title, and that could make it more difficult to get insurance in the future.

If you have any questions about filing a claim with your insurance company, or if you think you're not being treated fairly, call the Texas Department of Insurance Consumer Helpline at 1-800-252-3439.
