Hundreds of Houstonians marked Good Friday by participating in the Way of the Cross.

Good Friday is observed as the day Jesus was crucified and is the precursor for Easter.

"It is a really good way to remember what Jesus did for us," said Kristen Grammas.

"In Jerusalem, there is a very famous way the 'Via Dolorosa,' which is the Way of the Cross, so we thought we would start from here and march down to the co-Cathedral," said University of St. Thomas President Dr. Robert Ivany.

The Stations of the Cross are synonymous with Lent, Holy Week and especially, Good Friday. The group will stop for prayer at five religious stations through town, ending at Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on San Jacinto.

"We do five stations and there are readings from the gospels and some beautiful poems," said Kristina Leyden. "There is a perspective of Mary looking sorrowful and looking at her child dying for our sins."

It commemorates 14 key events on the day of Christ's crucifixion. The walk commemorates his final walk through the streets of Jerusalem, carrying the Cross.

"To be apart of something so beautiful and bigger than ourselves is something you can't even explain," said Leyden.

A final blessing will be given by at the end of the procession. The event is organized and sponsored by the University of St. Thomas Campus Ministry Office and Communion and Liberation.
