HOUSTON -

Tiny Tim, a 35-pound abandoned cat who became a local celebrity after losing eight pounds through diet and exercise, died from cancer Friday.

Tim was rescued in late December 2011 after animal shelter workers found him wandering near a school in the 1400 block of Kirkwood. He was taken to the city animal shelter, but when Friends of BARC heard about the large cat, they contacted Dr. Alice Frei, owner of Southside Place Animal Hospital to see if she could help monitor his weight. He weighed 28 pounds when he died.

The cat, who was diagnosed with cancer in mid January, was a resident at the animal hospital for 15 months after efforts to locate his owners by Friends of BARC were unsuccessful. Tiny Tim was named after the volunteer, Tim Hebert, at Friends of BARC who led the efforts to get him to the clinic.
