HOUSTON -

The attack in Boston has America on alert  as cities across the country are stepping up security.

Long before the explosions in Boston, Houston officials had been planning and thinking about this type of an event.

Local 2 sat down with head of the city's office of Public Safety and Homeland Security to talk about how Houston specifically received federal grant to train for this type of an attack.

Retired Assistant Houston Police Chief Dennis Storemski said Houston received federal grant money in 2008 and at that time had to choose which catastrophic events the city would prepare for.

One of the events chosen involved attacks with homemade bombs, called IED's.

"If we look at what's going on in the world in the events of terrorism, IED's are their preferred method of attack," said  Storemski.
