Jan. 18, 2013: The flu is spreading rapidly, so many hotels are taking precautions to make sure their guests don't get sick and help them if they do. Rachel McNeill reports.

HOUSTON -

The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show flu cases remain widespread throughout the country, including here in Texas.

While overall cases are beginning to decrease, flu-related hospitalization rates among the elderly have risen sharply.

Nine additional pediatric deaths were reported last week, bringing the total number for this flu season to 29.

Travelers are also finding they're not immune.

Given the flu concerns, hotels like the Royal Sonesta in Houston and others across the country are taking extra steps to make sure their guests stay happy and healthy.

General Manager Monte Hansen told Local 2, "We've done a couple special things, like having hand sanitizers and special tissue packets at the front desk. We also have special soups and teas available through our room service."

Hansen said the hotel also offers a free shuttle service for guests who need a ride to the doctor or pharmacy in case they need more than the over-the-counter medications offered by the gift shop.

Commonly touched areas on the property are getting extra attention.

Hansen explained, "(The elevators), we circle through a little more regularly during the flu season to make sure everything gets wiped down as well as the public restrooms. It's very, very important to stay on top of these things."

The idea is to prevent the flu from spreading and keep guests as comfortable as possible.

Hansen said, "Be prepared to have a great time and enjoy Houston and let our staff pamper you. That's what we're here for."
