Jan. 3, 2013: A man uses hot water to keep his apartment warm, creating enough moisture to cause the ceiling to cave in. Mark Boyle reports.

HOUSTON -

The cold weather and lack of power forced one man to get creative to keep warm. His tactic backfired when his ceiling collapsed on Thursday morning.

The property manager of an apartment complex near Kirby and the South Loop said the renter was being evicted after not paying his rent for months. The renter had also not paid his power bill, so his electricity was cut off, the property manager said.

The renter constantly ran hot water in his shower and sinks to generate warmth, according to the manager.

All that steam created so much moisture that part of his ceiling caved in. Sheetrock was scattered all over a staircase and throughout the living room.

The renter was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
