Sept. 30, 2012: An investigation is under way after an Alvin home, garage and plane are consumed by flames. Courtney Gilmore reports.

ALVIN, Texas -

An investigation was under way after an Alvin home, garage and plane were destroyed by flames.

The fire broke out at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on FM 1462 in the Songbird Ranch neighborhood near Savannah Plantation.

Authorities said the family inside was able to get out safely.

A small private plane and a car inside the garage were also destroyed by fire. The driveway doubles as a private plane runway.

Officials said it took four fire departments, Alvin, Manvel, Iowa Colony and Rosharon, to battle the flames. They kept it from spreading to other houses.

Alvin's fire chief said the homeowner was storing fuel from his plane in the garage.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
