HOUSTON -

The city of Houston has won its protest of the 2010 Census population count.

Originally, the U.S. Census Bureau’s release showed Houston's population to be 2,099,451 as of April 1, 2010.

The Bureau unintentionally left out some of the geographic areas that are within the city's jurisdiction.

After reviewing the Houston's documentation, the census agreed and revised the final count to be 2,100,263.

"We were quite surprised by the numbers released in 2011 because all indications were that we had already reached population of 2.1 million residents," said Mayor Annise Parker. "Of course, having an accurate count will also mean Houston will not be short-changed when it comes to receiving federal grants and other funding that is based on population."
