A man has died while riding in the Tour de Houston event Sunday, said officials.

Details about the death are still coming in, but officials with the race said the death was not the result of any collision during the ride, but was the result of a medical emergency.

Around 5,000 cyclists rode through the city for Sunday's annual Tour de Houston.

Officials said this is the first cyclist death during the race.

Mayor Annise Parker and Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis were also in the race, which kicked off in downtown Houston in front of City Hall on Bagby.

Funds for the ride benefit the City of Houston's RE-Plant Houston Program.
