HOUSTON -

The Alley theater is scheduled for a major facelift.

This is the first major renovation since the theater opened in 1968. Officials said this will give the company the availability to provide more shows and more performances.

"The audience is going to love the fact that we are going to be able to do things that we could never do before," said Dean Gladden, managing director for the Alley.

The Alley Theater is launching a $73 million capital campaign to fund a complete renovation of the building, including expanding the Hubbard Stage, extending it farther into the house and bringing the actors closer to the audience.

"We are doing a lot of work on the stage to make it a more intimate experience and then we are improving all of the amenities for the patrons from restroom facilities to adding a larger concession area, it will be a better facility," said Gladden.

Along with the renovation, the campaign will also fund the theater's artistic enhancement and expand the Alley's endowment and cash reserve to ensure its' financial security.

"By investing the $10 in artistic enhancement to upgrade the shows, by also spending $46 million to renovate this building, we will be able to take the quality of theater to new heights," said Roger Plank, Alley's board chair.

Officials with the Alley said they've raised $31 million towards the $73 million, but they still have a long way to go. They're asking for the public's help in raising the funds.

As far as a timeline of events, officials said they need to raise the money first before they can lay out a plan.
