August 20, 2013: An elderly man who was shot in the leg during an attempted carjacking speaks out. Courtney Zavala reports.

The great-grandfather who was rushed to the hospital Monday night after a attempted carjacking in southeast Houston is speaking out against his attacker.

Eighty-year-old Sherman Jones returned to his home in in the 4100 Block of South Acres near Leitrim Way around 10:15 p.m. after bowling, when police said a stranger approached him and demanded the keys to his red pickup. Jones refused and fought with the carjacker who was trying to grab the keys from his hands.

"I got excited and I charged at him," said Jones. "When I charged at him, he backed off and shot two times."

Jones said one bullet barely missed his head. The other hit his thigh.

"I didn't know I'd been shot in the leg," said Jones. "I didn't feel nothing until I got in the house and had blood all over my floor."

Jones was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital.

Jones knows he's lucky because this could have been worse.

"My daughter said next time that happens, 'You give them the money the truck anything else to save your life,"' Jones said.

Details about who the suspect is are slim. Investigators said he took off running in this neighborhood.

Jones said the suspect got out of a car, but he didn't pay attention to the make or model.
