Jan. 3, 2013: Two people are wounded in a drive-by shooting outside a southwest Houston house. Andy Cerota reports.

Two people were wounded in a drive-by shooting outside a southwest Houston house.

Around 1 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a call about a shooting on Fondren Village near Fondren Place and found a large crowd of people outside a house.

Witnesses said they were having a party inside the home when someone driving a dark-colored BMW drove by and opened fire.

"They broke the [car] window, and basically the next thing you know, one of them hopped out of the window with a big gun and just started shooting," one witness said.

According to police reports, one man was shot in the leg.  Emergency officials transported him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition.

Witnesses said another victim was also shot and taken to a local hospital.

"I don't know what happened," a second witness said.  "I just heard somebody start screaming, and when I looked up, all I saw were shots being fired."

Police spent hours interviewing witnesses at the scene to try and determine a motive for the shooting. Witnesses said they believe "rival gang members" are responsible.

"We have our own private police patrol that comes through the community," resident Mike Lane said. "That's paid for by the homeowners' association. Something like this is very disturbing to me."

According to Houston police, there have been 43 robberies, 53 aggravated assaults and 174 burglaries in the area from September to November 2012.

"What we're going to have to do is establish a stronger rapport with the Houston Police substation, which is not too far from here, and step up our community patrols, especially during the early hours of the morning.

Police said they do not have a suspect in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
