Feb. 28, 2013: Drivers in Fort Bend County can expect an easier route travel between two major highways. Andy Cerota reports.

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas -

Drivers in Fort Bend County can expect an easier route travel between two major highways.

University Boulevard now connects Highway 59 to State Highway 6.

The final connecting stretch opened Thursday.

It's a big deal for one of the fastest growing counties in Texas. According to a spokesman for the City of Sugarland, the 1.8 mile stretch of road was an important factor in getting new businesses like Texas Instruments and Costco to locate to the area.

The road is also expected to alleviate some of the congestion on some of the more heavily traveled areas of Highway 6.

Extensive parkland expansions, including a festival site for events along the Brazos River, is already in the works. The expanded roadway provides additional access not only for cars, but also for pedestrians.
