A man was charged Monday in connection with a triple shooting outside a southwest Houston sporting goods store, police said.
Houston police said Damion Wilkerson approached three people outside the Academy Sports+Outdoors store in the 7600 block of Westheimer Road at Voss Road at 7 p.m.
Investigators said Wilkerson asked one of the three, Benjamin Gonzalez, if he knew him. Gonzalez said he did not, officials said, and then his father, Victor Gonzalez, stepped in to diffuse the situation.
Wilkerson then pulled out a gun and fired several shots, police said.
"All of a sudden, I heard 5 or 6 shots. I started looking around and I started hearing a lady screaming outside," witness Suliman Mohamed said.
"I heard this woman screaming, 'He shot my husband. He shot my husband.' I just saw this guy lying on the floor, slumped over," witness Jade Phillips said.
A nurse who happened to be shopping at a nearby store ran to the victims to help.
"There was blood everywhere. It was really a horrific scene," Kristen Keister said.
Keister said she and a doctor who happened to be in the area started treating the victims.
"The one man that was more seriously injured, he was covered in blood and it was really hard to even see his face," she said.
Victor Gonzalez, 36, was in critical but stable condition at Ben Taub Hospital after being shot in the neck.
Benjamin Gonzalez, 19, was shot in the chest, and his girlfriend, Kanya Robler, 19, was shot in the leg. They were listed in stable condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Police said Wilkerson threw the gun in his truck and started running, but he was arrested at the scene. Investigators said when officers caught up with Wilkerson, he had another gun inside his pants.
Wilkerson was charged with three counts of aggravated assault. He is being held in the Harris County Jail with bond set at $90,000.
Wilkerson's criminal history includes charges of drug possession, burglary and theft.
Detectives are looking at surveillance video to try and piece together what happened.
